The day started out hot hot hot.. with breakfast overlooking the pool. We dawdled all morning away tanning and swimming and trying to keep the huge smile of our faces when my daughter texted the weather report from home (cold, colder and really cold).
Well the smiles soon disappeared as we checked out of our hotel to go to the port and catch our first cruise.. one of three strung together that we have carefully planned. Let me say here.. there is a reason for travel agents and apparently I need to learn this the hard way.
We inform the doorman of our destination and he replied that there were no cruise ships in port today hmmm.. must be some mistake. We have the correct date, so we look again at our tickets and realize we have the wrong city.. omg!
Norwegian Sun leaves from Miami and we are in Ft Lauderdale, now.. being geographically challenged as I am, I immediately think Oh shit.. we are screwed! Lordy lordy and bloody hell.. how can I be so stupid?
Plane tickets were through Royal Caribbean which is our cruise leaving from Ft Lauderdale. The cruise BEFORE AND AFTER are in Miami. Gee.. did I mention we particularly picked this hotel because of the proximity to the port.
This is bad and we are a little sick, until we learn that Miami is only an hour away and only.. A HUNDRED DOLLAR CAB RIDE ! Whew.. we dodged a big bullet there. It starts to rain and rains sooooo hard we can hardly see out the window .
Our cab driver is intent on breaking the speed and sound barrier and now we have a new fear.. please, please don’t get in an accident, like the one we had to go around to miss the traffic all backed up. The hour cab ride turns out to be 34 minutes wtf? This guy takes personal pride in breaking all records and brags about it!.
I don’t care.. I want to kiss and hug him for getting us there fast, safe and sound, but settle on giving him a twenty dollar tip. We are there so early that we get to stand in line for an hour until we can get through registration and board. It is now hot and muggy but we are informed that we are getting an upgrade in our room.. sweet!
Well our upgraded room turns out to be a a broom closet and we wonder what the hell the other room looked like.. geeze. This is the smallest room we have ever had on any of our cruises.. thank god for the upgrade. We decide to hang only our dresses and live out of our suitcases. We draw an imaginary line to stake our territory.. Sharon gets the toilet but I get the shower.. haha.
We also decide we will take in lots of activities to keep us out of our tiny room. Having made that decision, we skip the sail away party and have a nap till our bags are delivered (we do have our priorities) stress, sun.. and hour long life boat drill also did us in. Turns out the ship is two hours late leaving port and the view leaving Miami at night is spectacular!
We check out the ship for a favorite spot and to see which bar we might like to hang out in. The 12th floor lounge/observation deck is looking pretty good. Rev.. the bartender is friendly and makes us a frozen Bellini that will no doubt become our favorite.. until we run out of money at 9.00 a drink with out tip!
Supper at the seven seas dining room serves us the best lobster and steak that just melt in our mouths! Omg.. this does not bode well for our calorie intake. We decide to skip dessert until we see key lime pie (my fav) and warm bread pudding (both our favorites)on the menu.
Tomorrow is another day and we will skip dessert tomorrow.. hmmmm. We declare that the food is going to make up for the lousy room and we are happy campers.
The show after supper is ok until the banjo player on steroids shows up! He gives a long repertoire of every song ever written for a banjo and a whole bunch that weren’t (and there is a REASON for that)!
He promises we will see and hear him again through-out the cruise.. I decide to slit my wrists if I have to sit through that again. We check out the disco and realize we haven’t danced since the last cruise. Unfortunately it is freezing in there.. so we decide to go to bed, I mean there is only so much excitement we can take at our age..
