this is a true story and happened to me last night
This is a true story, and it happened to me last night.
Waiting until the last minute to run to the store and pick up a few necessities (three things) turned into the most bizarre scenario ever! Leaving my condo at 9:00 pm (the store closes at ten), it’s only a few minutes away. I pick up my three things, and a couple more for a total of 114.00 dollars later (ya, I know), I deposit all three bags in the trunk of my car.
I usually don’t put my groceries in the trunk, but last night I did, and as I closed the lid, I heard a beep. I turned and looked at my cart and realized I had also put my purse in the trunk, shit! I stared at the trunk in disbelief and cursed my stupidity. What now? I’m totally screwed! My house keys, my phone, my whole life are now locked in the trunk. My keys are attached to my purse, and I used the key fob to open the trunk.
A couple parked beside me were getting into their car, and the husband asked if I needed help. I needed a miracle and was so upset I couldn’t even think straight. He seemed really genuine and concerned for my predicament. They were a young Muslim couple with a 7-month-old baby boy. She was in full Muslim attire, while he was dressed like for the office. I’m just guessing at this because I don’t even know any Muslims.
She suggested checking the driver’s door; it was locked. Now I’m beat. I thought maybe I could use his phone to call CAA, and I knew this was going to be a long night. He asked if I had another set of keys, which I never even thought of. I said yes, but at home in my condo. Now here is the amazing part of this story. I ALWAYS LOCK all my doors, even the one going out to my ground floor patio.
When I left last night to pick up ‘three things’ at the store, I knew I was coming right back. I did something I never do: I left the TV on and my patio screen door open. I always lock the patio door. To get onto my patio, you would have to climb up over the iron railings and hop over. I look at him, and I see he is determined to help me any way he can.
He offers to drive me home and climb over the railing to get into my condo and get my extra key from my bedroom in my makeup case. This is the only way to get into my place because of all the security doors. OMG… I’m so grateful. I found out on the drive over to my place that them being at that particular store was only because the fresh flower supply there was the best, and it was his wife’s birthday!
He kept assuring me everything was fine and no problems. Well… climbing over my iron railings was a little challenging only because I have flowerpots everywhere and it was like an obstacle course. He did it, and I explained the layout and how to get to my bedroom and where my keys were. There is more to this, but he eventually found them and made it back to the patio and up and over it again!
Their baby is crying by now, and so am I. I’m so happy. My oldest granddaughter has 7-month-old twin boys! We didn’t get far enough in the conversation for more, because I’m only a couple of minutes from the supermarket. They were from over on the other side of town. He took me to my car, and I got in and got my purse and tried to give him money for being so kind, caring, and helping me out of a disaster.
He would not take anything, and that brought me to tears again. There are so many good people out there, and I was truly humbled. They saved me from hours of waiting around for a tow truck, and all the hassle that entails. I asked their names as they were leaving, but I’m hard of hearing, so I could only say ‘what’ a couple of times, so I didn’t catch it.
I very seldom ever put my groceries in my trunk. I NEVER leave my patio doors unlocked. The couple that helped me never shop at that particular store, but it was her birthday, and they wanted nice flowers. What are the odds? As I’m lying in bed later on, I’m thanking my higher power, and it comes to me… My first love after my divorce (he passed away four years ago); it was his birthday yesterday too…
I certainly don’t have to make stuff up; life happens to me all the time… and I am grateful.
