Kentucky Fried Chicken skins, lake life and Prego

Kentucky Fried Chicken skins, lake life and Prego

So it has come to this… My breakfast this morning at the lake: leftover Kentucky Fried Chicken! The skin is my favorite part. I’ll eat the meat eventually, once I’ve picked off every last bit of skin, mmmm freaking delicious, and I enjoyed every last morsel. I had picked it up on my way up here yesterday; I was craving Kentucky Fried Chicken. The chicken was okay; it added the required protein, right? Two extra-thick slices of toasted cheddar cheese on onion sourdough bread, with lots of butter this morning, were next; omg, kill me now!

This lake life is everything I’ve been missing. Here on my lakefront deck drinking my coffee, writing and now eating whatever the heck I want, sigh… I would love a butter tart right now, but unfortunately, I left them at home. I do have a box of Chapman’s ice cream novelties I bought at the village store yesterday; I had forgotten my mayo at home. It’s too early for ice cream, though, or is it?

I got my exercise in as well. I have two squirrels that are giving me the runaround; one got into my sunroom. I finally chased him out, and I don’t do chase, but he was pissing me off. Those two little beggars are mad that I took over this deck, and they want me off. I’ve named them Pete and Repete. They are taking the place of all ducks and pelicans, which I have seen none of so far.

The bears are not showing themselves either, so colour me happy about that. Everyone will start arriving later today for their weekend of non-stop watersports, fishing, drinking, fire pits, and… partying. We also have fireworks tonight in Echo Bay. A boat parade tomorrow if we are bored and want to participate, hmmmm. It’s a holiday long weekend here in Canada… Oh Canada :  )

We (all you who are reading this and myself) took a little three-hour break and drove to Spiritwood. This was a twofold need: the sun hits this deck after lunch, and it’s too hot to sit out here. The other is that I packed so fast and haphazardly that I forgot to pack extra panties (sorry for that). Information overload, I know.  While there, I browsed the stores and also hit another grocery store.

What is it with being at the lake that we think we need to bring everything? Well, I had forgotten mayo, and I definitely needed that in case I made potato salad. AND what is this…  PREGO spaghetti sauce!!!!! OH MY GOD, do you even know how many of us are looking for this product? See, it’s like this: as Canadians, we are boycotting products made in the States. It’s our little way of supporting our own country in the face of the bully to the south of us.

Our country has been taking a lot of shit and abuse from that one to the south of us. So, we do our own thing, avoiding holidays there and not buying American products. We’re not very vocal about it, and we apologize a lot, but we are proud Canadians and not open to being a 51st state. Good grief, we’re the second largest country in the world (Russia is the largest). We are also proud to be a part of the United Kingdom.

Anyways, on with my story. I’ve been missing my Prego sauce a lot. So, I loaded up five jars and noticed the fine print: Canadian company produced in the United States, below that. Sometimes we gotta take a hit for the cause, and I love my Prego sauce, dammit!  Ah well, I’m back at the lake now and feeling a bit sheepish; I will share my Prego sauce with my daughter. I’m feeling better already.

So breakfast is a thing of the past, and I decide to have the same thing for supper. I extracted another piece of chicken from the bucket in the fridge, making sure to take the one with the most skin. Ahhhhhhh…. delicious! Cold chicken/skin never tasted soooo good. I also ate some stringless green peas; I needed something green to make up for my poor choices in protein. A text comes in from my daughter.

‘Come for supper,’ it read. Well, I was only half finished with my piece of chicken (the skin, lol).  I put the meat part back in the fridge because I never turn down a meal invite at the lake, less cooking for me :  ) My daughter is one cabin over; my granddaughter shows up to escort me over there. I appreciate this gesture because … well, there are bears here.

As I walk in, I see my son-in-law at the barbecue. What’s for supper, I inquire … “grilled CHICKEN,” he replies …..

The End….
