September 28th 2015 is the day we took full advantage of the Queens birthday in Perth Australia. My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of riding all the trains and busses free. Scarborough, where we are staying, is a 40.00 fare by Taxi to Freemantle where we disembarked from Legend of the Seas .. our cruise ship.
Cruising has its own bonuses, food being one of them, yes… we took full advantage! Thank goodness we have some fat to live off of, aussie-land is not cheap. Breakfast was three pancakes for 13.00 coffee 5.00 and I struggled with paying that, but my caffeine fix prevailed.
More surprises were in store for us as we hit a major exhibition taking place while we are here ..bonus! Water, a small bottle, is 4.50 but across the way I get a coffee for the same price.. and why does everyone here drink espresso I wonder?
Old people whine all the time about prices and I am no exception. I will not bore you anymore with prices except to say that a mixed cocktail cost 18.00 here, beer is a little cheaper.
Well maybe one more. A good looking surfer dude was listening to us complaining when we ordered our pizza at a local hangout last night. They wanted a 2.00 surcharge because it was a holiday! Sam, that’s his name, insisted on buying our pizza for us. He said Canadians had been really good to him. That was so nice of him .. I secretly think he was hitting on me.
Alright.. one more. To add insult to injury we related to him our experience using the ladies room at the train station, they wanted to charge us .50 cents! We decided to take our chances peeing our pants.. it was the principle of it, geez.. who charges to use a bathroom.. like really? I told them they were on par with Mexico! AND I took their picture!
Ok now where were we .. oh right.. free transit all day, we love it here in Australia! The people are charming , friendly and so funny too. Because of the free transit yesterday we decide against renting a car. We will take in King’s park today which is a must see and maybe we’ll get sidelined somewhere else while we are there.
It is the everyday people that make our trips so interesting and insightful. The two bus drivers yesterday were friendly and chatty .. well one didn’t have his coffee yet and was a little cranky but he got himself ‘sorted out’ and then opened up. We then got into a discussion on coffee loll. Always sit in the front of the bus as close to the driver as possible.
The exhibition is packed, every man and his family is here.. what were we thinking? Well .. for me I am on a mission.. flying pigs! The brochure had those exact words and I mean to see them. We get the just as it is starting and the is no way in hell we can even catch a glimpse.. the crowd is ten deep and people are even climbing up on those big garbage dump metal things to get a look!
I ask a six foot something guy in the back if he would mind holding up my camera to get a picture? He says he can’t see anything either .. I think he is lying to me .. but why? Ah well , we move on and decide to catch the next show after eating a 7.50 hotdog and I got a cup of espresso with hot water for 4.50 .. a deal.
So we que in 45 minutes early to get a good seat (the last show was over 15 minutes ago) and it is filling up fast. The show is a lot of showmanship taking advantage of a five year olds prowess with a microphone and an attitude.. he is pretty cute and gets the crowd warmed up.
The pig races start out first and each section gets to cheer on their pig.. ours came in last. The cheerleader picked from our section has to make pig noises into the microphone. I can’t believe we are actually doing this, but I am staying to see the flying pigs dammit!
Up next the flying pigs and I have my camera ready … it goes by in a blur.. three pigs.. I actually missed the last one it happened that fast! I am posting the pics I took but that is all I am going to say about this. You want to see flying pigs…? you will need to make the trek and que up in line same as us.. I will not spoil it for you, these are the actual pictures untouched.
We have had enough and are on our way to explore more of Perth but get shutdown when the busses quit early. We need to catch the train back to Scarborough.. and onto our free supper compliments of Sam the surfer dude that secretly wants me…
To be continued…. King’s Park today and then Rottnest Island tomorrow..
