home again
I’m doing something I couldn’t do for the last six weeks.. I’m sitting outside drinking my morning coffee : )
No, I have not been sick and no I didn’t give it up. I’m home from Yuma Arizona and it was not possible to do what we take for granted every day here. I couldn’t wait to open my windows and patio doors and let in the fresh green air! Okay, so I know that air is not green but geez it sure feels like it. Everything is green here except when it’s white I guess, so there’s that ; (
It was a hot 115F which is 46C .. and that’s another thing, I’m tired of doing the math. Seriously, I’m done with it, I’m getting too old for that shit. AND I don’t care either. I do care about how hot it was and thought I should share some thoughts on this. I don’t think I can live in that heat during the summer months. Granted it was an unprecedented heat wave and the whole world is feeling the effects of climate change. The thing is, my body is not young anymore and I do need to breathe and when it’s so hot, that’s a problem. The heat literally takes your breath away.
It was bearable at night in the pool only. Also at the movies where it was so cool you needed a sweater. I’m not complaining really, okay so actually that’s a lie. It’s just too damn hot for me and I can’t live in the heat. Those that live there obviously can and that’s fine but it’s not for me. I can take minus forty-40 (which is the same in Fahrenheit and Celsius btw) only because I can layer up to keep warm. When it’s too hot I can’t peel my clothes off (and you wouldn’t want me to) and I can’t peel off my skin either so there-in lies the problem.
Breathing is important, without it we are no more. Ah well… my guess is that we adapt to what we have to deal with and unfortunately my adaptability years are behind me. Making my way back south will have to wait until cooler temps prevail and I have a new respect for those living in those temperatures.
I’m home and back at the lake where I started a Sunday Funday tradition of inviting everyone that is up here, on our side, over for breakfast. Perfecting the perfect pancakes has been my goal this summer. I have solicited recipes from my chef friends and also looked online. I’m on the quest for the perfectly delicious pancake recipe. Btw, I have always sucked at making pancakes and that’s why I am trying so hard to turn this around. In the past ONE pancake made by me would fill you up for the whole day.. and not in a good way.
Fast forward to today, a brand new Sunday. I’m back home at the lake and happy for everyone to feast on my fantastic pancake breakfast spread. I have everything ready, maple pork sausages from Prairie Meats, watermelon, grapes, and fruit (pears are delicious, peeled and fresh out of the fridge nice and cold, oh my). I have laid out fresh orange juice, tomatoe juice, and cranberry juice. Real Canadian maple syrup, raspberry, and Saskatoonberry ‘made in Saskatchewan’ syrup.
Now for the pancakes, which I will serve hot off the griddle. Something goes wrong with my batter (I winged it this time and didn’t follow a measured recipe) shit! I’m bummed out big time and make an executive decision on the spot. I secretly bring out the Aunt Jemima pancake mix that you just add water to, and secretly stir up a batch. I take the first batch over to the table for everyone to pass around and tell them I am making another different secret recipe batch.
For the second batch, I mixed it with milk instead of water (had to make it my own ya know : ) When it is ready I tell them to help themselves and let me know which ones they liked better. Well, it wasn’t long before everyone was remarking on the ‘fluffy’ second batch and making yummy eating sounds! Omg.. they loved them.
So here is what I have to say in this Sunday Funday Blog.. screw the homemade recipes for pancakes. The pancake people that put those boxes together know way more than me about this and I have much more respect for them now. Stick a fork in me I’m done! No more pancake recipes for me, thank God.
Have a great Sunday and week ahead… I’m really happy to be home. I love the cooler temps but I do miss the new man in my life. Aunt Jemima, thank you for making my life easier : ) Prairie Meats, your sausages are the best!
