Well, I’m starting my Sunday Funday blog this morning. I had such a great day yesterday I need to tell you about it. Now keep in mind I am in the States and our sad money is no comparison to theirs but.. when in Rome. It was the park coffee morning get-together yesterday at 8:30 am. I try to attend stuff here, but if it is before 9:00 am forget it, I do make an effort for this one though. It usually includes treats and pastries, so there’s that.
Staying away from thrift stores and goodwill stores is challenging for me, garage sales are also off my list. This sucks and diminishes my joy in life somewhat, but let’s face it, I have zero willpower and these places always have something that I didn’t know I needed. My shed is a testament to this, as are my closets and every other spare space here. Apparently, old people need a lot of stuff to keep us happy.
We also like bargains on food and we’ll share which grocery stores have the best deals on whatever it is that is on sale on a weekly basis. This includes the best places for eating out. Inflation has arrived here in Yuma as it has for the rest of the world. When I hear the complaints about gas prices it makes me want to laugh out loud, but I don’t. When in Rome, right? So against my better judgment, we decided to have a look-see at a couple of thrift stores after coffee yesterday morning. It was too soon to go for breakfast after the coffee treats.
I was maybe half-assed looking for a narrow desk for my office/bedroom here in the manufactured home that I have up for sale. I know… but I’m still living in it and want it nice. For staging, I justified to myself.. lol. Sooooo… four thrift stores later I found the perfect desk. It was exactly what I wanted and the price was right. Off to breakfast, we go after stuffing the desk into the back of the hatchback car.
We stumbled upon a breakfast special at the Paradise Casino here in Yuma on Sunday morning last week. My 12.90 breakfast for an 8 0z NY steak and eggs which was a bargain, turned into 7.77 on our bill. My partner’s omelet breakfast was 8.50. Being in the catering business for so many years, I’m familiar with different cuts of beef. It was definitely an 8oz NY (an end cut) but it was grilled to perfection, medium rare, and it was absolutely delicious. I was taken aback at the special price and wanted to question it, only because I wanted to spread the word. Well, my partner in crime said “noooooo don’t say anything” so he paid and we left. Oh, I was there to pick up a free gift as well, we get them when we accumulate points on our player’s card for gambling.
We didn’t stay and gamble, why look a gift horse in the mouth, am I right? Besides I had spent 45.00 on that desk, so home we went. I couldn’t get that special out of my head though, so later in the week I phoned the casino to find out if it was a mistake or if it was an unadvertised special, they do that a lot here in the casinos. Turns out it is an unadvertised special and they serve it every morning from 7:00 am to 11:00 am. We went to eat breakfast there again. We also decided to split it, he doesn’t like steak and I’m not fond of eggs. I also don’t like the deep-fried hashbrown cubes that most places are fond of serving. They brought an extra plate, he got my eggs and the hashbrowns and we split the toast.
The breakfast was as expected and delicious. The bill was 8.45 with tax and how can you beat that? I should mention here we old people don’t order coffee or drinks, water is free : ) and with lemon : ) : ) If you live down here go check it out, I thoroughly enjoyed it and the price was right, if you don’t gamble.
My other really great deal this week is also worthy of mentioning here, especially for my Canadian friends and family. I scored a cheap flight home for Christmas with West Jet. I leave at a decent time on December 20th from Phoenix direct to Saskatoon, Sask. (3 hours and 19 minutes) for 126.00 CANADIAN dollars, including taxes!!!!!! I know, I actually got it for 108.00 because I had 17 West Jet dollars in my account, omg Merry Xmas to me! That I have to sit on the floor and wear a parachute doesn’t matter… just kidding, of course, I’m not doing a checked bag because I fly back to Yuma two weeks later. Cheaper flights with West Jet on their own site yet, do not include checked bags or seat selection, but that’s okay.
And this winds up my blog for Sunday Funday. I know this is not breaking news, it’s just another day in my life. My brother asked me once.. what do all you old people do when you go south? (he is one year younger than me)
“We go there to lie around in the sunshine while waiting to die” I answered him with a condescending smile. He is so clueless sometimes, but he’s my brother and I love him.
